Nice small hotel, large clean rooms + Small hotel-only 3 floors. Rooms are clean and well furnished. 3rd floor rooms have south west facing balconies with side sea views. However they face on to a car park and are overlooked by a huge new hotel being built. Beds are very hard and have plastic mattress covers. Breakfast is Ok but not inspiring.

2nd visit here + Just returned to Madeira for a new year break and stayed at the bright star for the second time. Hotel was as remembered with friendly staff, clean and spacious rooms and a great location for everything in Funchal. Would definitely return yet again.

+ Great location. Easy walking distance into and around Funchal. Greeted warmly by reception staff. I cannot remember her name, but she was very friendly and helpful. She gave me advice/suggestions on where i should travel around the island, what foods and drinks to try out and where i could go out to try them. The breakfast buffet was what i expected. The room was clean and tidy. I had a little balcony with 2 chairs and a table that i could use. The only downside in the room was a panel on the wood floor that had been not replaced after damage. And additionally, the bathroom sink tap was leaking. Had to use a towel to soak up the water the 4 nights that i stayed.

+ Nice hotel with good access to Funchal. On side of a hill so there is some uphill walking. Staff very helpful. Cons:- creaky bed, no tea/coffe making facilities in room. balconies are very close.

Great location + The room is spacious and the bed was comfortable. The room has balcony overlooking a small pool. There is free wifi which was great. Breakfast was either scramble eggs or fried eggs, mushrooms or tomatoes, cereals, yogurt, bread and meats. The staff are very friendly especially Zita who was great giving us advice on where to go or answer any questions we had. The hotel is only 1km from the centre of Funchal and there is a lot of restaurants close by e.g English, Irish, italian and Indian.

Fantastic Hotel + Its a very good hotel near by the boulevard off Funchal. It has 18 rooms and the people are very kindly. Clean rooms and good beds. The breakfast is more than enough and there is everything. There is also an elevator.

A weeks stay in Funchal including Christmas + A lovely small and friendly hotel. With only 18 rooms there is a personal touch to your stay here. The breakfast was good and fresh and plentiful. Our only issue was we found the bed uncomfortable and the towels could do with being renewed. Other than that, we thought that the hotel was excellent and in a good location.

+ Did not like the giant cockroach running about the room. Despite the proximity to the ferry terminal we could not get breakfast in time to catch the ferry. Staff were nice though

Nice but not 4 star + I hesitated between three and four for my rating. Bright Star is a nice hotel and is very well situated close to port and marina although it is next to a grotty empty site and a car park. The rooms were smart and large but basic. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast can be broken down into two parts; the cold options which were plentiful and tasty, and the hot options which were both sparse and unappetising. The pool area was deserted when I stayed and it’s not in a great location next to a car park. It’s well priced but it doesn’t merit the four stars on the wall and whilst that is reflected in the price paid it still doesn’t fit right with me. So a rating of three it is. I would happily stay there again, especially for the location, but I do wonder if I could have found a little more nearby for similar money.

+ Staff were very helpful, property was clean. Good location. Would recommend. Only negative was that the beds really squeaked when you lay down on them - and sound insulation wasn’t the best but would def stay again regardless of these minor points.

+ The staff were extremely helpful, coordinated rides for my arrival from the airport and back to the airport. Everyone was very helpful. The breakfasts were lovely!! The location is very near the harbor as well as near restaurants and shopping, it's also very near the new casino.

Great for a short trip to Funchal + We stayed at Madeira Bright Star for 3 nights during our roundtrip. It's a simple hotel, located near the port and centre of Funchal. Though the immediate surroundings (an empty lot, a car park and a busy street) do not seem very attractive, the location is great for a city trip to Funchal. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious enough and offered a balcony overlooking the small swimmingpool of the hotel and the parking lot of the neighbouring hotel. The hotel has laminate in the room, and although it was a bit worn out in some areas, it's much more hygienic than carpet. The quality of the bed was good. Though the room was kept tidy, the sewer air in the bathroom was quite unpleasant. Breakfast buffet is basic, but offers enough variety. If you're coming by car: Though the location is the biggest asset of Madeira Bright Star, since you can walk to both the port as well as the city centre within a few minutes, you might…

If you are looking for value, look no further. The warm friendly welcome's included in the price. + Last here in March 2023, our sixth visit. It has all the Government requirements for a four star, true it hasn't a 60 foot crystal chandelier in reception but the friendly, helpful smiling staff make up for that. You don't want to go far tonight, no probs, 4 bars, 15 good restaurants within ten minutes. You do want to go a bit further, a twenty minute walk to the centre of Funchal. I've looked at the hotel photographs, all true. Not so sure about the critical ones, seems a peculiar way to spend your holiday. It's not mentioned anywhere but all bedrooms were completely refurbished on January 2023. I can't beat it for value.

+ My wife and I stayed here for 9 nights. The location was excellent with easy access to restaurants and bars, and the harbour was just a two munite walk away. A 20 to 30 minute walk would take you to the centre of town, old town, and cable car station. All areas of the hotel were spotlessly clean and had a modern feel. Every member of staff was pleasant, engaging and could not do enough to ensure our stay was trouble free and pleasureable. Breakfast was largely continental, but with some hot options - usually eggs with a vegetable choice and a meat choice, such as sausage or bacon. We felt that the hot choices were sometimes slow to be replenished. In summary, the hotel was well placed, clean, with excellent staff and represented very good value for me. We would stay here again.
