Sri Lankan idyll - we loved it! + This a beautiful small but spacious hotel in colonial style which was developed by acclaimed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa in the 1980s and renovated recently with great taste. Its simply and comfortably furnished public spaces flow into each other and link with the outdoors through courtyards, flowers and plants in huge pots. The main dining room is open to the garden on two sides with blinds that can quickly be pulled down if it rains. The garden is a good size with lush lawns, frangipane trees, a cool loggia and two pools. At the end of the garden is the main railway line from Galle to Colombo. Trains are not that frequent and add to the charm of one's stay. The beach is just the other side of the railway line, great for walking and sunsets. The staff were all delightful - nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Overall a pleasant and enjoyable stay but room for improvement + The grounds of this hotel are absolutely beautiful as are the buildings themselves. On the whole the food was very good, although I did feel some options were overpriced. − The service was a bit hit and miss. On my first evening I wasn't allowed to sit straight down at a dinner table, but rather to take a seat in the bar seats. This then meant I wasn't sat at a table when my food arrived. On another occasion I clearly stated I did not want mayonnaise with my dish, yet it came with it within the sandwich. Whilst the rooms looking beautiful, each morning there was heavy condensation on the windows.

+ A beautiful hotel in a stunning location by the beach, and the perfect way to end our holiday in Sri Lanka. Our room was gorgeous and so comfortable, and the staff are friendly and helpful, and made us feel so welcome. There is a really personal touch. All the food was delicious, and breakfast was a real treat. We had to checkout early in the morning and they ensured breakfast was served early for us to accommodate this. Would highly recommend.

Lovely building and grounds, let down by food and drink + The grounds are very beautiful. The location moments from the very beautiful beach was charming. − All in all the food and drink was disappointing and some of the blandest during a 3 week stay in Sri Lanka. It was also very expensive too. We stayed in more high end hotels during our stay in Sri Lanka, where the food was cheaper and more tastier. It was a real shame you had to request in a day advance a Sri Lankan style hoppers breakfast. There was hardly any guests who stayed there when we were visiting yet we were pestered every day multiple times what time we would be dining.

A besoin de grands travaux ! + Le lieu est sublime. Luxe calme et volupté ! − Le bruit hallucinant du train qui fait trembler les murs ! Nous avions une suite, qui au finale est une grande chambre familiale car il n'y a pas d'intimité. Il y a des fissures un peu partout, il faut vraiment tout rénover. Le SPA n'est pas à la hauteur, un minuscule salle de massage avec un éclairage au néon. Pas de fruit de mer ou de poisson du jour à la carte bien que la mer soit à 100m. Vraiment trop cher !

Memorable 3 night stay in a beautiful setting. + Absolutely wonderful 3 nights spent at the Villa Bentota. The hotel was designed by Geoffrey Bawa, the famous Sri Lankan architect, and it is absolutely beautiful with lovely gardens and a path to a pristine beach across the train track. Our room was spacious, clean, colonial in style with a comfortable bed. Breakfast was really nice, relaxed with fresh fruits and cooked breakfast, Sri Lankan or Western. Lastly, but not least, everyone who worked there was super friendly and helpful, service was great throughout. Recommend in a heartbeat. − Everything was great.

+ Super expérience le lieux est magnifique, le personnel aux petits soins . Les chambres sont trés belles . On est rester une journée entière à se reposer après avoir fait une longue route de Ella et la fin du séjour pour retourner a Colombo. Le train passe au fond du jardin c est très original.

La décoration est impeccable, la propreté du lieu est sans faille, l’emplacement proche de l’océan avec le train qui passe devant, la piscine parfaite pour des longueurs, la gentillesse du personnel, le calme…on reviendra − Rien du tout
